WNYOPA Inc. is a boat club that formed around members having performance boats and has grown into a club that includes all types of power boats. Members are from all over WNY, Ontario, and Rochester. The club meets the second Tuesday of every month at different locations around Western New York. Newsletters are sent out monthly indicating the meeting place for the following month and upcoming events. Throughout the year, the club puts on several organized events and members also meet to go to the beaches, hang out in the river, and travel to other events put on by other clubs. This is a great place to meet other people that are passionate about boating and also want to continue growing the sport.

OUR BACKGROUND Buffalo, New York is located on Lake Erie and the upper Niagara River between the United States and Canada. The Niagara River flows out of Lake Erie and branches to the East and West River around Grand Island, New York, and eventually flows over Niagara Falls, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The lower Niagara river continues northward through the Niagara Gorge eventually emptying into Lake Ontario, directly across is Toronto, Canada, With two of the five Great Lakes within a stone’s throw of Buffalo, it is no wonder that the western New York region is rich in powerboat racing history.

Starting in the early 1900’s, Gold Cup Racers like Gar Wood, Edsel Ford, Horace Dodge, and Guy Lombardo shuffled off to Buffalo every year to race in front of the Buffalo Launch Club, the oldest powerboat club in America. The first local race clubs were the Marsh Boat and Gun Club, B & T Boat Club, and Niagara Frontier Boat Racing Association. NFBRA hosted the first divisional offshore event in Buffalo and was organized by Humphrey Stinson and assisted by Jay Smith from APBA in 1986 and continued through the early 1990’s.
